New Timber drying facility at Mulgrave Sawmill

The woodland department at the Mulgrave Estate will soon be benefitting from extra capacity and facilities at the Sawmill yard, Sandsend.

A new timber drying facility is being built to double the storage capacity for saw logs at the yard. Keeping saw logs under cover is essential as they air dry and season prior to splitting, bagging and sale in the forthcoming winter.

This will be a real boost for the Sawmill in its plans to expand and develop new markets for the future. A tractor driven splitting machine will also be purchased to provide dry kindling to sell to customers and offer a complete package to keep the home fires burning this winter.

The EU LEADER programme, through its forest productivity element is providing some match funding for the project.

John Beech, Asst. Rural Surveyor at the Estate noted ‘We are very grateful for the financial assistance of the LEADER programme, the forest productivity element ties in perfectly with our vision for the sustainable management of the Estates’ woodlands, whilst providing new products and expanding our woodland business for the future’.
