Deepgrove Quarries, Sandsend

Mulgrave Estate are working with Natural England, the government’s adviser for the natural environment in England, to manage and enhance this important area for historic and wildlife significance at Sandsend quarries.

The old quarry is recognised as being a noteworthy grassland site and contains many locally rare species. Without management these important coastal grassland species will be lost.

Over the coming months there will be some small - scale selective management to combat the scrub from taking over the site completely.

The quarry will be stock fenced, and a series of kissing gates will be installed enabling visitors to follow the Sandsend Trail with ease. A small amount of livestock will be introduced to begin to graze the site during the summer months. As the quarry is classified as a Scheduled Monument, we have already gained consent from Historic England to undertake this work.
