Work begins at Deepgrove Quarry site, Sandsend with initial gorse clearance
Gorse, whilst being a colourful member of the pea family, is an invasive shrub that overtime will engulf areas and create a monoculture.
The diversity of the quarry makes it a haven for wildlife and the Estate have entered into an agreement with Natural England to ensure it remains so. Estate contractors have been busy removing some of the thick stands of gorse before the bird breeding season starts. Several areas will remain for cover and nesting sites. Removal of the gorse cover is the first stage in restoration of the quarry which will be followed up by fencing later in the summer.
We’ll keep you posted on progress ……………………………
