Mulgrave Volunteers Service

The new Mulgrave Estate Volunteer Service has been hard at work on the old railway line verge at Kettleness. Over 200m of new traditional hedgerow has been planted to form a corridor of thorny scrub to benefit wildlife, landscape and cover for livestock. A new fenceline was installed recently by contractors, and the adjacent hedge will eventually provide a more permanent stock proof barrier in years to come. Species such as Hawthorn, Hazel, Crab Apple, Field Maple and Blackthorn make up the woody corridor of scrub. 1,500 small trees were planted, and these are protected by spiral guards supported by canes to keep them upright. If not protected the trees will be eaten by rabbits and hares. The volunteers braved the coastal weather to establish hedge and have created something that will be in the landscape for many, many years. We are always on the look out for more volunteers with lots of exciting projects to be done on the estate such as waymarking new trails, path maintenance, gate building and tree planting. We can offer some quality work experience for the right person.
