• Whitby Naturalists Club visit Mulgrave Estate

  Around 20 members of the Whitby Naturalists Club visited the Estate on the evening of the 3 July for a guided tour. The group spent two and a half hours looking at the various conservation work that is taking place across the Estate and the huge difference this is making to the biodiversity value of the area. The group looked at tree planting schemes to link woodlands, winter bird seed plots, hedgerow restoration projects, moorland management and parkland restoration schemes. We will aim to continue to work closely with the Club into the future on mutually beneficial schemes.

• Conservation grazing begins to restore Mulgrave's moorlands

  Conservation grazing begins to restore Mulgrave’s moorlands Belted Galloway cattle are assisting in the restoration of one of the important moorland areas on Mulgrave Estate. Westonby Moor, close to the A171, is part of the extensive Countryside Stewardship scheme to reintroduce grazing and combat natural succession on moorlands across the Estate. By combining the grazing with some active intervention to remove some of the birch scrub and gorse, the moorland will gradually reappear as the dominant habitat. This type of moorland restoration contributes to stabilising the net amount of the North York Moors area covered by this internationally important habitat. The local area has the largest expanse of heather moorland in western Europe therefore is a key habitat to conserve, enhance and expand wherever possible.

  We are pleased to be working with our farming tenants Chris & Colin Foster, who have introduced their Belted Galloways or ‘Belties’ as they are known, onto the moor. As our Conservation Lawnmowers”, the ‘Belties’ will stay on the moor for most of the year and are classified as a rare breed in the UK.

• New cattle crossing installed in Tanners Beck

  Good water quality in the streams and rivers across The Mulgrave Estate is one of the key environmental drivers for estate management. The Estate have been working recently with the Environment Agency to maintain and enhance water quality wherever possible. A new cattle crossing point has just been installed in Tanners Wood Beck enabling livestock to reach other parts of the grazing land on the Estate without polluting the watercourse. 200 concrete sleepers now provide a solid surface walkway between 2 farms whilst new fencing and gates corral livestock through to the adjacent fields. The materials were provided by the Environment Agency as part of the Sandsend Bathing Water Quality initiative which is committed to improving water quality in the catchment.

• Mulgrave Estate delighted to sponsor the Whitby Fishermen’s Under 8’s boys’ team for the 2018/2019 season.

  The Estate are thrilled to have sponsored the Whitby Fishermen’s Under 8’s boys’ team for the 2018/2019 season. The team have had a great season finishing second in the league. The club had started fundraising for some new kit to keep the team looking smart and warm during the harsh North East winter. As friends of the club, we were delighted to show our support by purchasing waterproof jackets and woolen hats for the boys. The team coach, Jason, expressed his thanks for the support. He said “We are hugely grateful for the support from Mulgrave. Not only have they helped to keep the boys warm this winter, they’ve also helped to instill a sense of pride into the team. We play in the Teesside league and often come up against much bigger clubs so it’s great that we can look the part too! It’s made a huge difference to the team this year!”

• A Marathon of fencing is being installed at Mulgrave Estate

  You may have seen lots of new fencing being constructed around Mulgrave Estate recently. Our contractors have been busy installing approximately 26 miles (equivalent to the length of a marathon!) of new fencing to allow for various grazing management to be undertaken on the Estate’s grassland and woodland holdings. Prior to the work we had lots of old fence lines that had either been patched up or fallen into disrepair altogether. Without good fences, stock fields become un-grazed which leads to the detriment of the grassland. The fences have been constructed from wooden posts and sheep netting to enclose the fields.

  John Beech, Asst Rural Surveyor at the Estate commented, ‘It literally has been a marathon to get all of the work done in time for the grazing season. We have more to do over the Summer and into next Winter, but ensuring our boundaries are in good condition means we have secure grazing plots and we can bring some of the key habitats that we have across the Estate back into positive management’.

  Some of the fencing is being part funded under the various Agri Environment Schemes that Mulgrave Estate have successfully applied for.

  Roseville Childcare is a fantastic childcare business on Mulgrave Estate ran by one of our tenants. Roseville have received their Ofsted Certificate of Registration and offer childcare sessions for children aged 6 months to 5 years.
