• Wild bird /bee mixes bring early summer colour to the fields at Mulgrave

  You may have noticed that some of our fields are changing colour as we approach the summer. We’ve recently added just over 4ha of Bumblebird mix to the fields below Tom’s Yat beside the A174 coast road. This brings the total to just under 19ha of the mix across the Estate. Situated in favourable locations, the mix includes species such as Linseed, Fodder Radish, White Mustard, Kale and Quinoa. Not only does this turn to seed and feed the wild farmland birds in the winter, it also benefits insects such Bumble bees, solitary bees, butterflies and hoverflies during the summer months. Combined with another 27ha of Winter bird food mix this equates to a significant area of land devoted to crops to encourage biodiversity across the Estate. Keep a lookout for the fields of colour this summer, they’re bringing real benefits to the birds and the bees of Mulgrave Estate.   These fields are just two elements of our extensive wildlife offer through our Countryside Stewardship agreements with Natural England, where we have a significant number of environmental options from the scheme that are benefiting the environment and wildlife across the Estate.

  Mulgrave Farmland Bird Count – the results are in !

  It seems like a lifetime ago now but back in February, Mulgrave Estate joined in with the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. This national event encouraged all farmers and landowners to get involved and record our ‘feathered friends’ on the farms for half an hour between the dates of 7 – 16 February. A number of farm tenants across the Estate participated in the scheme and the results were really interesting. The Estate office co-ordinated the scheme locally and forwarded the results to the national database.

  Gorse, whilst being a colourful member of the pea family, is an invasive shrub that overtime will engulf areas and create a monoculture.

• COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update

  We would like to reassure our guests that we are adhering to the guidelines issued by the British Government, Public Health England and the National Health Service regarding coronavirus (COVID-19). The health of our staff and guests is our priority, and we have therefore put in place the following precautionary measures:We have introduced additional cleaning to our already comprehensive routines, especially focusing on touchpoints such as door handles, kitchen, bathrooms, etc. and have continued the use of disinfectant. All our staff are receiving regular guidance and updates on how to prevent COVID-19 in the workplace.  In line with Government guidance, if you have a high temperature, or a newly acquired continuous cough, please postpone your visit, and stay at home for seven days. • Deepgrove Quarries, Sandsend

  Mulgrave Estate are working with Natural England, the government’s adviser for the natural environment in England, to manage and enhance this important area for historic and wildlife significance at Sandsend quarries. The old quarry is recognised as being a noteworthy grassland site and contains many locally rare species. Without management these important coastal grassland species will be lost.

• Work begins on multi - purpose ponds at Mulgrave Estate

  Our contractors are currently busy maintaining and re establishing some pond and wetland sites across the Estate. At Barnby Howe a series of ponds are due to be installed to provide wildlife habitat as well as holding back soil run off from the surrounding land.

• GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count 7 – 16 February 2020

  The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) have launched their Big Farmland Bird Count event for 2020. The event is nationwide and encourages anyone from beginners to experts to take part in a 30 minute farmland bird survey.. A record sheet and identification guide is available online with a simple tick list to fill in and email or post back to GWCT. Surveys can take place anytime on farmland between the 7 and 16 February 2020

• Winter traditional boundary work at Mulgrave

  Staff and contractors have been hard at work restoring traditional drystone walls and hedgerows around Mulgrave Estate this winter. Plenty of hedge and hedge tree planting has been completed around High Leas Farm in the recent weeks dividing fields and creating wildlife refuge and corridors.
