  Our Head Forester Tommy Milburn gave an interesting insight into how we manage the estate woodlands, our sustainable firewood business and a tour of the Mulgrave Castle Ruins. During the day our two recently retired foresters, Jim Mortlock and Steve Parkin, were presented with long service awards by the society President Sir James Scott. They had served over 101 years between them!

  On Monday 20th June all our staff at Mulgrave took part in a fancy dress “Dip” on Sandsend Beach as part of our Ukrainian fundraising.

  Well done to all our team who braved the chilly North Sea, raising funds for our Ukrainian appeal. What a show!! Thank you also to Dan Hardcastle and all his team at Fish Cottage in Sandsend for supporting us with some amazing Fish & Chips afterwards and Laughing Whale for the great T-Shirts supplied.

• Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

  This weekend (25th June 2022) a small and hardy Mulgrave Team set off to complete the challenging Yorkshire Three Peaks. With an early start they took up the challenge of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough completing 29 miles, with a mix of weather including hail and thunderstorms, the intrepid five completed this huge undertaking in ten hours!! Well done to Robert, Mike, Fraser, John & Tommy, raising funds towards the Ukrainian Effort.

  Over the coming weeks the Estate are holding a range of fund-raising events for the Ukrainian effort, including a Quiz Night at the Stiddy PH on Monday 13th June, a Music Evening at the Stiddy PH on Friday 17th June and grand open event at the Castle on Sunday 10th July, with open gardens, stately home car boot sale, stalls and games – please see our website https://mulgrave-estate.co.uk/ for full details of all the events.

  In addition, the whole Estate team have agreed to do a “Team Dip” at Sandsend Beach on Monday 20 June. We also have a small team who have challenged themselves to complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks on Saturday 25 June. • Head Forester - Jim Mortlock retires after over 50 years of dedicated and loyal service

  Today, after over 50 years of dedicated and loyal service, saw the retirement of Jim Mortlock as Head Forester on the Estate. During his retirement presentation, our Estates Director commented “Jim has clearly been an inspiration and role model to us all. Your achievements over the past 50 years will be enjoyed by everyone for a very long time. The many hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of trees planted under your watch will be your legacy. Your work with Lord Normanby in carrying on the great work of Humphrey Repton in designing the landscape around the Castle and maintaining Mulgrave Woods for public enjoyment are just two examples of the great contributions you have made to this Estate”. We would like to thank Jim for his 50 years of service and wish him a very long and happy retirement. Today we also welcome Tommy Milburn as our new Head Forester, who now has the keys to Mulgrave Woods and has some very big boots to fill.

• Mulgrave Estate Sandsend Car Park - Open Easter Holidays

  Sandsend Car Park, via East Row, Sandsend - will be opening from 9am, Saturday 9th April for the Easter holidays.

  Ideally located for access to the beach, all the village shops, cafes, restaurants and amenities. Card/cash payments £6.00 per day.

• New hedgerow planting reaches the 6,500m mark at Kettleness !

  Across the Mulgrave Estate we have been working with Natural England and the North York Moors National Park Authority to restore the ancient hedgerow network in specific targetted areas. One such area is in the Kettleness landscape out on the coast. A location with little tree or hedgerow cover, it has been a real challenge to restore the old network of field boundary hedges here. The majority of the old hedges date back to the 1850’s and have become weathered and stunted with only a few remnant stems visible in certain places.

  Lord & Lady Normanby are delighted to allow public access to the Mulgrave Gardens. Each Open Garden date is hosted by different organisation in aid of a local charity. Well behaved dogs are allowed access but must be kept on leads.

  The dates for 2022 are:

  10th April - Whitby Fishermans FC - Juniors

  29th May - Sport Mulgrave

  26th June - Lythe Parochial Church

  10th July - Lord & Lady Normanby, fund raiser for Ukraine

  24th July - Whitby Regatta

  28th August - Lythe Village Hall
