A number of Exmoor ponies have arrived on the Estate recently to assist us with grazing our moor, heath and rough grassland areas. The Exmoors are highly regarded as being one of the best choices of livestock for conservation grazing. The ponies are semi wild and more than capable of adapting to life on our moors here at Mulgrave. They are on loan from the Yorkshire Exmoor Pony Trust (YEPT) and are recognised as a rare breed in the UK

Restoring and repairing Murkside’s dry stone walls.

Work has begun in earnest on the southern part of the Estate at Murkside Farm. Located between Goathland and Egton, the fields here at Murkside are divided up by a network of dry stone walls. Unfortunately, over the years the walls had fallen into disrepair and restoring them is going to be a mammoth task. Over 2000m has been identified for restoration and Estate contractors have recently made a start on the work. Restoring dry stone walls is a real skill with an eye for detail needed as well as ensuring the wall will be stockproof and stand for another 100 years or so. The wall restoration project is part of Mulgrave Estates’ higher tier Countryside Stewardship agreement.

You may have noticed that some of our fields are changing colour as we approach the summer. We’ve recently added just over 4ha of Bumblebird mix to the fields below Tom’s Yat beside the A174 coast road. This brings the total to just under 19ha of the mix across the Estate. Situated in favourable locations, the mix includes species such as Linseed, Fodder Radish, White Mustard, Kale and Quinoa. Not only does this turn to seed and feed the wild farmland birds in the winter, it also benefits insects such Bumble bees, solitary bees, butterflies and hoverflies during the summer months. Combined with another 27ha of Winter bird food mix this equates to a significant area of land devoted to crops to encourage biodiversity across the Estate. These fields are just two elements of our extensive wildlife offer through our Countryside Stewardship agreements with Natural England, where we have a significant number of environmental options from the scheme that are benefiting the environment and wildlife across the Estate.

Mulgrave Farmland Bird Count – the results are in !

It seems like a lifetime ago now but back in February, Mulgrave Estate joined in with the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. This national event encouraged all farmers and landowners to get involved and record our ‘feathered friends’ on the farms for half an hour between the dates of 7 – 16 February. A number of farm tenants across the Estate participated in the scheme and the results were really interesting. The Estate office co-ordinated the scheme locally and forwarded the results to the national database.

Gorse, whilst being a colourful member of the pea family, is an invasive shrub that overtime will engulf areas and create a monoculture.

Mulgrave Estate are working with Natural England, the government’s adviser for the natural environment in England, to manage and enhance this important area for historic and wildlife significance at Sandsend quarries. The old quarry is recognised as being a noteworthy grassland site and contains many locally rare species. Without management these important coastal grassland species will be lost.
