Sandsend Sleeper & Parcel Wagon
All aboard Mulgrave Estate‘s beautifully restored railway carriage for a unique first class stay like no other, on the site of the former train station at Sandsend.
The carriage named ‘Sandsend Sleeper & Parcel Wagon’ have been lifted onto the former platform at Sandsend to join ‘The Station’ holiday cottage.
The carriage was built in York in 1956 and is a MK1 Tourist Second Open. Starting works in the LNER livery in which it is now painted, commonly described as ‘blood and custard’ but as the paintworks were stripped back to bare metal it unveiled different colours including Southern Rail and Scotrail. The carriage started work on the East Coast Main line and is thought to have been to Sandsend and Whitby in the past.
You don’t need to be a train spotter to appreciate the wonder of this luxurious and lovingly restored carriage and station holiday cottage as it also boasts a prime elevated position providing stunning sea views along the coastline towards Whitby. The carriage will provide luxury accommodation for up to four people promoting a lovely feeling of nostalgia for both young and old. The Parcel Wagon provides accommodation for 2 people.
The carriage has welcomed its first guests.........'We really enjoyed our stay, the carriage is very comfortable and well equipped for cooking. We loved the extra bits like the glasses with trains on them and trains on the toilet roll and towel holders. The views are amazing and we really liked Sandsend. We hope to be able to return.

Layout of the carriage: The entrance doorway is in the centre of the carriage, this leads into the open plan lounge/ kitchen / diner. The bedrooms are located off either side of this and the bathrooms off the bedrooms.
Entrance: Via the gantry, steps and a walkway.
Lounge / Kitchen / Diner: Light and spacious, open plan design.
Electric hob, oven & grill, microwave, washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge with ice box. Dolce Gusto coffee machine. Folding dining table and chairs. Breakfast bar with 2 leather bar stools. Large luxury corner sofa. Nest of wooden tables. Wall mounted smart TV. Stunning panoramic views along the coast towards Whitby Abbey.

Outside: Patio furniture on the gantry.
Please note the Parcel Wagon can not be booked without Sandsend Sleeper.

TV: Please note that since the Bilsdale TV mast burned down in August 2021, parts of the Sandsend / Whitby area now do not receive a terrestial signal with any consistency and in some cases, not at all. In all Mulgrave Estate holiday cottages you will find smart TVs and we would ask that you utilise the likes of BBC Iplayer to watch both live TV and of course, to access catch up.
