The carriage has welcomed its first guests.........'We really enjoyed our stay, the carriage is very comfortable and well equipped for cooking. We loved the extra bits like the glasses with trains on them and trains on the toilet roll and towel holders. The views are amazing and we really liked Sandsend. We hope to be able to return.
Thank you for the lovely welcoming gift of provisions, they were delicious and we appreciated them.
Back to normal life now, well as normal as it gets at the present time, but the memories of this New Year holiday will stay with us'

Having holidayed in Sandsend a few times already, and loving the area, we were thrilled to watch online the amazing installation by a huge crane of 'Sandsend Sleeper'. Wow, we anticipated our holiday here with bated breath. We were in no way disappointed! What can one say? Only superlatives will do! The carriage has been restored an fitted out wonderfully well. The sea views are to die for. many passers-by on the Cleveland Way were fascinated and we engaged in conversation with lots of them about 'S. Sleeper', as you would if you were staying in Nora Batty's Cottage now a holiday home, too! Sandsend has only one fault - the road! Here we are sufficiently far away not to notice it. The sea is a constant companion - it lulls you to sleep - & the tides a constant source of fascination. So enamoured are we of 'S. Sleeper' that we've booked another week next May - already. The only downside of May being that Mulgrave Woods are not open in that month, to protect the nesting birds from disturbance - a reason we can only applaud!. Now a few tips: 1. do not lock yourselves out - it would be so easy to do, there being only one key, & the door closes remarkably easily!. 2. Do shop for food at the Community Shop & Post Office in Lythe, just up the hill. The assistants are lovely, their home-made produce if delicious (especially cheesecake & quiche & bread) & they have a delightful Tea Garden at the rear). Sandsend Stores are also good - anything to avoid supermarkets! And to support local shops, cafes & pubs. 3. The Hart Inn has a great new Beer Garden at the rear, (away from that road!) easy to miss if you head for the front garden straight away. 4. The new Fish Cottage is good, set back from the road, nice garden, with freshly fried fish & chips. Downside - the food is served in take-away boxes, with wooden cutlery, even if you eat in the garden!. ALL IN ALL - unique & imaginative accommodation, in a gorgeous setting, and amazing experience, so who cares about the weather? Roll on next May. (Great to be amongst the first to be Sandsend Sleepers!) - H, E & the Gang

A delightful week - we were blessed with a couple of days of absolutely glorious weather! The online booking for takeaway fish & chips from Fish Cottage was brilliant. The Tea Garden at Lythe Community Shop is worth the walk up the hill for! The Supper Club frozen meal from the Sandsend Store was very good too! We walked a couple of sections of the Cleveland Way - stunning views although the path is very close to the cliff edge in places!!. (park at Staithes & get the X4 to Saltburn & walk back to this lovely carriage - although the diversion near here does involve a lot of steep steps!) The walk back from Whitby along the beach when the tide allows is much nicer than going up the road and on the path by the golf course. There's also a fascinating leaflet in the local shop with photos of all the viaducts & tunnels on this fascinating stretch of railway line up to 1958.

A fabulous holiday and a unique property with the most stunning views! We love Sandsend and have stayed in Mulgrave holiday accommodation many times but 'Sandsend Sleeper' is something very special. We were also delighted we added on 'parcel wagon' for our week's stay. Delightful walks; beach walk to Whitby, uphill (initially) via Lythe, called for Sunday lunch at 'The Stiddy' - was excellent and Sandsend itself has lots to offer. We can definitely recommend 'The Hart Inn' for drinks & meals, staff friendly and lovely new garden area at the rear. 'Sandsend Sleeper' received lots of attention from passing walkers so we're hoping we'll be able to book again in the future!!!!. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you for a fantastic holiday.

Once again we have enjoyed our holiday here at Sandsend. The weather has been kind to us and our stay here in the Sandsend Sleeper has been fantastic. Looking forward to coming back to Sandsend later in the year. My retriever R will miss the sands and the sea so much. Very peaceful. I felt my shoulders lift as soon as I arrived. The view is spectacular but for maximum enjoyment you need a good pair of binoculars and a subscription to the Marine Traffic App. Be warned dawn is very early in the Summer! If you like art galleries Geall at Grosmont is excellent. The Stiddy in Lythe is a good pub with a quirky menu with many good vegetarian options. The valley is very peaceful. S & S

When we arrived at the railway carriage and we were shocked and excited that we were so close to the sea. For the first few nights I slept on the sofa and even that was very comfortable. The 4th night I slept in the wagon and the beds were like marshmallows, the showers were so nice and thank you for leaving ginger parkin and shortbread in the cupboard. We loved the walk nearby. We have stayed in 'The Valley' for many years but we loved the Sleeper. Very quirky but comfortable, wonderful views of the changing sea and surf and plenty of room as only the two of us and our small dog. The table and decking in the garden gets the sun and was used for some lunches. We very much enjoyed ourselves, has friends over for the day a few times and they loved it too. Thank you Mulgrave Estate for such a fun and original holiday experience. - J & N

So lovely comfortable and warm even during the wildest storm for years. Special treat for me as a boy in the 50's I lived in Sansdend and rode on the last train to Whitby from this station. My house overlooked the goods yard in East Row where 2 of these coaches were parked during summer and I watched the boys and girls playing - never thought that 65 years later it would be my turn! My father was born in 1908 in the farm seen on the left skyline just above the village, in the early 50's/60's a World War 2 submarine was being towed to Middlesbrough - slipped its tow rope during a stormy night and came ashore just below here - imagine my surprise when I opened the curtains and saw it. I shouted 'there's a submarine on the beach'. Mam and Dad thought he'd really cracked this time - a lovely village to grow up in - all houses occupied by local characters - not holiday makers. So special - didn't appreciate it then. Enjoyed the stay so much have booked Station house next November. Sorry for ramblings of an old man! M & E & Family & P

Perfect location, a unique & relaxing experience. Unfortunately all the pubs & cafes here closed, but we enjoyed the Cod & Lobster at the beautiful village of Staithes. Wits-end is a delight for an afternoon treat, lovely homemade food. The walk on the Mulgrave Estate is a must. Highly recommend the Community Shop in Lythe. Train is fantastic!

We waited four months from the initial booking and once the time came we weren't disappointed. The coach was extremely well catered for, and we didn't want for anything. Tea, coffee and a pack of biscuits were provided as a welcome / essentials 'treat'. We normally stayed in Whitby and know of Sandsend and when we found out about the converted railway coach, we jumped at the chance to stay in it and take in the sights from its stunning position. The coach itself has bene fitted out to a modern standard and the instant hot water and hot radiators was impressive. it is sited ON the old platform because putting it in front of the platform (where logically it could have gone) places it too near to the cliff edge, which I totally understand. When the Middlesbrough to Scarborough via Whitby line was up and running, virtually all the station en-route had camping coaches for families to stay in the summer, with Sandsend being no exception. But when the line closed during the 1960's, these were all removed. The Sandsend Station had two camping coaches, behind the station, close to the wooded area. So, it was a nice touch to re-live those days! The area itself is very interesting to discover the railway infrastructure which has now long gone. In particular, a magnificent iron bridge which spanned from the station, over the road, and re-joining the bank on the other side. There was an even more larger and magnificent iron railway bridge spanning the valley at Staithes. We can't wait to return. Well done to all concerned! What a lovely location - we had one beautiful sun rise over the sea - fascination of watching the weather change was brilliant. Wet and very windy but warm and comfortable in the carriage. A wonderful week at Winston house, beautifully walks through Overdale wood, a carpet of wild garlic with bluebells, primroses and violets and a cuckoo. Up and down the meadows beyond Raithwaite Hall (more woods) watching two hares as we made our way to Newholm. Spectacular coastline on our walk to the Runswick bay and just enjoying being here watching the sun set from the blue bench with two friendly ducks, and snoozing in the sun shine at the top of the garden. Well worth the journey, such a great treat to be here after the year of lockdown. Thank you K, C J , L & G

We have been coming to the valley in the wonderful Holly cottage for many years but this year we decided to try Kelowna cottage and we are so glad we did. Beautiful views, so comfortable and cosy. perfectly clean too! Every thing about the cottage is perfect. Th valley is like our second home. Watch out for one of the residential rabbits, ducks and the famous robin. They love birdseed bits of veg. Would also just like to say that Sandsend Stores has everything you will need and the staff there are amazing. Thank you Mulgrave .....Counting the weeks until our visit in October. S, S & S

We've had a lovely, relaxing week in a very charming cottage in a superb location. I had brought everything with me , but was pleasantly surprised to see the supplies that had been left for us - milk, toilet rolls, toiletries and of course a lovely 'Yorkshire goodie bag!'. We stay locally once a year and always result in spending a large amount of our holiday on Sandsend beach. Loved everything about this cottage - open plan and very spacious. Picked on an extremely windy weekend but the gales were mostly on the Saturday night. Lovely day walked to Whitby and back along the beach. Great cafe just off the beach so went there a couple of times. The log burner was on every night for added warmth - only enough logs for one night so contacted Mulgrave and within 10 minutes a huge bag was delivered. Cant fault anything. Would definitely stay with Mulgrave again. S, P and little M.

We have had great weather (only 2 hours of rain on Sunday afternoon) we have had a lovely week here at Sandsend. The cottage is well appointed and was a good base to visit the surrounding villages and Whitby. We have been coming to North Yorkshire for many years and we never get tired of this part of the east coast. We can recommend The Runswick Bay tea rooms and the Ellerby Country Hotel. Our second December stay here has been very enjoyable and comfy. Our walk to Mulgrave castle (using an old orienteering map ) coincided with the installation of the new information board about the old castle which was very interesting. We recommend the seafood platter at the local café with its marvellous view over the Sandsend beach. We really enjoyed having a Christmas tree in the sitting room last year - perhaps we are a week too early this year. Happy Christmas to you all. S & G

Very many thanks for giving us such a good ten-day break. We loved Campion but I am afraid our hearts are still in little Eden. It is so iconic and in this wonderful unseasonable weather we have been able to enjoy the view out to sea through the arch of the bridge. First visited Whitby in 1969 with my parents and my brother s. We stayed in our caravan near Hawsker but most days drove to Sandsend, parking just down the way. I'd walk our dog up the valley and think how lovely it would be to live in one of these cottages. I thought that for the following 8 consecutive family holidays and even later, visits to the area had to include a trip to Sandsend and a wonder up the valley, So finally , after that first holiday 50 years ago, we have stayed here. It has been as lovely as i thought - quiet, peaceful, lots of weather, lovely sea & views - perhaps all the better for being able to reflect back all that time. I think its unlikely we will wait another 50 years to stay here- perhaps in the next year or so!! :) Also nice that somethings never change. Many thanks Mulgrave Estate!! A & J

This is our first stay in Sandsend, although we have visited before, and it wont be our last. We found the cottage to be very clean, comfortable and in the perfect location. A great spot to visit the local area by car and ideal for walking the dog- walking along the beach. Our first visit to Eden cottage which is very cosy, clean and very relaxing, we enjoyed the views and the walks from the cottages. The weather was better than expected and enjoyed sitting out for breakfast in the warm sunshine. The area is amazing for walks with our black Labrador piper, although we live in York it has been wonderful staying in such a beautiful area with lots to see and do, along the coast as well as inland, we will certainly be back. Enjoyed the Hart Inn very good value for money and had the biggest fried fish I have ever seen. Had a walk in Mulgrave woods which was very peaceful, we most of our time around Sandsend. Another wonderful week in Eden Cottage we look forward each year to coming to stay. We do all the same things each year with our girls and we never tire of it. Lots of body boarding, swimming, walk to Whitby, walk along the cinder path, sitting on the slope with a coffee, dog walks around Sandsend and Mulgrave woods, and of course sitting in the garden enjoying the lovely valley, with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. My sister and I have had such a wonderful relaxing 4 days the cottage has been warm, cosy and a brilliant base from which to walk and explore ( a little haven from the husbands) Although this area has been our second since 1947 there is always something we find to soothe the soul. I have often looked at these little cottages and wished for a stay here (our bucket list I suppose) and it has not disappointed. We will hopefully be back to enjoy more of Eden Cottage. M & M.

The main road has stepped up a notch " so please be careful whilst crossing" We love Whitby this time of the year, some great running spots to Whitby and back. This is my third stay in Eden cottage and my 5th stay in Sandsend in three year. I have already booked to stay in Kelowna cottage for July. The cottage is wonderfully cosy, with everything that you need. I've never been here on my own before, but just needed a peaceful break and Sandsend is the ideal location to relax. The Hart pub is always welcoming, good food at great value. Sandside café is great for breakfast after a long morning walk on the beach. Great bus service in and out of Whitby. Hamonds teashop (above the jewellers) by the Abbey Steps in Whitby does a lovely clotted cream tea, and dogs are allowed in also. Weather has been superb ( as it always seems to be here). I've enjoyed it so much that I have extended my stay for a further7 nights. I will be back again and again. S & M.

Honey, the Labrador loved the walks we were careful with regards to the beach for Honey all is well. A lovely fortnight was spent (mostly) in the sunshine exploring the North Yorkshire Moors and Coast. Particular highlights were the surf school at Whitby, the beach at Scarborough and the food at Sandsend Fish Cottage. We had a fantastic week in Rose Cottage. It has everything needed for a holiday base. We enjoyed visiting York, Robin Hoods Bay, Staithes and Whitby. The Sea Angling Trip was a highlight, as was fossil hunting (the beach north of Sandsend (past the headland) at low tide) was the best for fossils). Its the second time we have stayed with Mulgrave Estate in the past year. Considering it was a last minute booking, we have to say this cottage hasn't disappointed. Real home from home feeling; even for an anzious 3 year old. As always the Mulgrave welcome pack was a nice touch and was very welcome after arriving late with nothing to eat and drink! We had a wonderful time at Lythe Rose Cottage!! Upon arriving, we had a lovely welcome pack filled with yummy delights, and the cottage was absolutely stunning, fitted with many special touches for that home away from home feel. Sandsend itself is beautiful, and we'd highly recommend taking a boat trip around Whitby - not forgetting the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey too. And be sure to stop by the Magpie - its the best fish and chips we've ever had! A shout out to Andy too, who was here every day to service the hot tub. We really enjoyed our stay at Lythe - Rose Cottage! We enjoyed day trips to Runswick Bay, Whtiby, Pickering - to see the castle & steam train, and Hutton-le-Hole to the Ryedale Folk Museum. For anyone visiting with young children there is a playground behind the village hall in Lythe - a 2 min walk from the Cottage (turn left out of the cottage gate!) The S's

If you like walking there is a lovely walk from the Cottage to Kettleness then follow the coastal path to Runswick Bay, lovely coffee shop at the end. There is a lovely long beach at Saltburn to walk on and do some paddle surfing if you like, lovely fish and chips from 'Seaview' to finish off! Had a fabulous stay at “Rose Cottage”. What a homely and practical place – made perfect by a wonderful week of sunshine. Nice enclosed garden for the dogs, with a wonderful hot tub we really enjoyed – what a treat after a long walk in the stunning countryside & seaside. So good we will be back (like Arnie!!!). We visit the east coast several times a year and have stayed in many places – this is by far the best yet! Rose Cottage have everything we needed for a great holiday, it is homely, warm and clean. A long walk, a dip in the hot tub and an open fire to end the evening – Wonderful! We are already looking forward to our return late this month and will hopefully be back again early next year. We have been coming to the cottages here at Mulgrave Cottages for a number of years. We always stay in The Valley but this Autumn we decided to try ‘Lythe-Rose’ and we weren’t disappointed!!! As always, the Cottage was immaculate with everything you could possibly need. There is also the added luxury of of the amazing hot tub which is wonderful to use as the sun goes down with the lovely lights – it feels quite magical. We spend some evenings in The Stiffy next door, which was so welcoming, the staff and the management are exceptional, as is the food, please try the quiz on Sunday night too. Still close enough to The Valley and Sandsend that hold very dear memories for us. Also, lovely to see our friends in Sandsend Stores too. Perfect as always, Karen. See you in April. S & S

An enjoyable stay here in sunny Lythe. Surprisingly warm all weekend so lots of walking, (& running – including up Lythe Bank!!) visited Whitby & Saltburn with many places in-between. Enjoyed a take-out from Fish Cottage in Sandsend – was good & they have a pre-order service. The Cottage is delightful, especially the hot-tub after a day’s walking. So really enjoyed our fifth stay in a Mulgrave Cottage – we hope to be back very soon. N & J

Great spot, so close to Sandsend but outside. Super village shop with ever-changing cakes and a newly-opened pub, The Stiddy, with exceptionally friendly staff and a very tasty, home-cooked menu. After all the reviews here, we also tried the Fish Cottage for a takeaway and weren’t disappointment. Next time, we’ll try the sit down restaurant. At high tide and the bad winds, its fantastic to base yourself at the car park at the bottom of the hill and watch the breakers and, like me, get very wet!! By the way, the half-hourly bus service outside the Cottage goes to Whitby and Middlesbrough if you want to leave the car behind.

As frequent visitors to Mulgrave cottages we were pleasantly surprised when we opened the door. The cinema room and hot tub proved to be great hits with all our family. What a wonderful surprise and what a wonderful week we have had in Stream cottage. We are regular guests of Mulgrave cottages so jumped at the chance to experience this new one. We had no idea how wonderful it is. We love everything about it, the kids especially love the hot tub and the cinema room. We are frequent Mulgrave Visitors and always thought Stream cottage was the prettiest in the valley. We were delighted to find it available to rent and it is as wonderful as we imagined. We were the lucky ones who got to spend Christmas in this gorgeous cottage. We adore all the quirky rooms. Our 2 cocker spaniels especially loved the log burner. The cinema room was fantastic for watching the Christmas movies. The hot tub was a bonus. Overall, we have had the best Christmas and we look forward to staying again. C Family.
